Union Bank Leverages SCE Rebate and Lowers PC Energy Use by 58 Percent

Union Bank reduces PC Energy Use by 3.2 million kWh, Saves $387,000 Annually and Receives Project Cost Rebate from Southern California Edison

Seattle—June 11, 2009—Adaptiva today announced that Union Bank, N.A. has reduced PC energy use by 58 percent after successfully deploying Adaptiva Companion™, a PC power and configuration management software, on 12,500 desktop computers.

Environmentally friendly desktop computing

San Francisco-based Union Bank powers down PCs during non-work hours reducing energy use by 3.2 million kWh, saving $387,000 and eliminating 2313 metric tons of CO2 emissions annually - equivalent to powering 320 homes. This environmentally conscious initiative qualified Union Bank for a business computing rebate from Southern California Edison (SCE).

“We recognize the importance of minimizing the impact of our operations on the environment. Companion with its measurable PC energy savings has helped us make an immediate impact,” said Susan Miller, senior vice president, Union Bank's Corporate Social Responsibility.

Improving IT and end-user productivity

Union Bank's desktop environment is managed with Microsoft's System Management Server. The aim was to reduce environmental impact and increase business productivity by providing a highly available and secure computing environment. Companion's PC configuration management and power management capabilities work together to make this possible.

According to Robert Walters, vice presidentof Distributed Computing Services, “Leaving PCs on for system maintenance during non-work hours resulted in wasted energy. We can now switch PCs off as Companion powers them on during non-work hours, completes maintenance tasks and powers PCs off. We save energy while delivering a reliable computing environment without any end-user disruption.”

Slow climate change and get a rebate

Many utilities recognize the powerful energy conservation opportunity that Companion provides. In order to receive a project cost rebate Union Bank provided the following Companion reports to SCE:

  • Number of PCs being controlled and a list of licenses
  • Quantified energy savings across the PC base

Peter Burnham, founder of Adaptiva said, “Companion is easy to implement and provides a quick energy conservation win while increasing IT productivity. In this economic environment, rebates from various utilities provide a great way to do the right thing without any budgetary impact. In California, the project cost for Companion is covered by the rebate.”
